How to clean and maintain Garmin G3X glass cockpit screens on piston planes

To clean and maintain Garmin G3X glass cockpit screens on piston planes, use a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth and an approved cleaning solution. The primary goal is to remove fingerprints, dust, and other smudges without damaging the anti-reflective coating.

Cleaning Process

The principle of consistency is vital for proper maintenance. Always follow these steps to avoid damaging the display.

  1. Power Down the Unit: Turn off the G3X display before cleaning. This not only prevents accidental inputs on the touchscreen but also makes smudges more visible, allowing for a more thorough cleaning.
  2. Dampen the Cloth: Lightly dampen a clean, microfiber cloth with a cleaning solution. Do not spray the solution directly onto the screen. The liquid can seep into the seams around the display’s bezel and cause damage to the internal electronics.
  3. Use an Approved Cleaner: The most common and recommended solution is a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution or an avionics-specific screen cleaner. Avoid using household cleaners that contain ammonia, bleach, or other harsh chemicals, as these can permanently damage the anti-reflective coating.
  4. Wipe Gently: Use a gentle, linear motion to wipe the screen. Avoid applying excessive pressure, which can damage the display’s delicate layers. Wipe from top to bottom or left to right until all the residue is removed.

What to Avoid

  • Avoid Paper Towels: Do not use paper towels, napkins, or other rough cloths. The wood fibers in these materials can leave behind tiny scratches that will accumulate over time, reducing the clarity of the display.
  • Avoid Abrasive Materials: Never use abrasive materials or scouring powders. These will scratch the display’s surface and destroy the anti-reflective coating.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Stay away from household cleaners like Windex, Fantastik, or other cleaners that are not specifically approved for avionics screens.
  • Avoid Direct Spray: As mentioned, never spray the cleaning solution directly onto the display.

By following these simple guidelines, you can keep your G3X displays clean, clear, and in excellent condition. Regular and proper cleaning ensures the longevity and functionality of your avionics.
