Best practices in hygiene and cleaning glass cockpit displays on piston airplanes

Maintaining clean glass cockpit displays is vital for visibility and safety. The best practice is to use manufacturer-approved cleaning solutions and non-abrasive materials. Most avionics displays have an anti-reflective coating that can be easily damaged by harsh chemicals.

The Dos of Cleaning

  • Do use a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth. These cloths are designed to gently lift dust and fingerprints without scratching the delicate screen.
  • Do use a cleaner specified for anti-reflective coatings. The most common recommendation from manufacturers like Garmin and Dynon is a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution. A small amount on a cloth is sufficient.
  • Do power off the unit before cleaning. This prevents accidental inputs on a touchscreen and makes smudges more visible, ensuring a more thorough cleaning.
  • Do use a gentle, linear motion. Gently wiping in a straight line is less likely to cause microscopic scratches than a circular motion.

The Don’ts of Cleaning

  • Don’t use cleaners containing ammonia, bleach, or harsh abrasives. Products like Windex and other common household cleaners can permanently damage the anti-reflective coating on the screen.
  • Don’t spray cleaning solution directly onto the display. The liquid can seep into the seams around the bezel and cause damage to the internal electronics. Instead, dampen the cloth and then wipe the screen.
  • Don’t use paper towels or rough cloths. These materials can leave behind tiny scratches that will accumulate over time, reducing the clarity of the display.
  • Don’t apply excessive pressure. Pushing too hard can damage the display and its touch-sensitive layers.
